Floss, Fabric & Needles: No-Stress Supply Guide

A beginner-friendly supply guide for cross stitch: fabric count, DMC floss, tapestry needles, hoops, scissors, and what to skip at first.

Buy less, choose better

Your first supply kit should remove friction, not create a new research project. Start with common materials that are easy to see, easy to replace, and forgiving while you are still learning.

The no-stress shopping list

Most beginner-friendly ThreadingOurJourney patterns work well with 14-count Aida, DMC stranded cotton, a size 24 tapestry needle, a 6 inch hoop, and small sharp scissors.

  • Buy first: 14-count Aida, exact DMC floss colors, a size 24 tapestry needle, a simple hoop, and scissors.
  • Skip for now: Linen, specialty floss, large organizer systems, very tiny needles, and full-coverage projects can wait.

Choose fabric that helps you see

For a first project, 14-count Aida is the friendly default. The holes are clear, the weave is sturdy, and the finished size stays easy to frame.

Use the floss numbers from the pattern

Modern charts usually list DMC colors by number. Buy those numbers first, separate the strand count the pattern asks for, and use two strands on 14-count Aida unless the chart says otherwise.

Pick the right tapestry needle

A tapestry needle has a blunt tip and a larger eye than a sharp sewing needle. Size 24 is the common starter default for 14-count Aida and two strands of floss.

Add only tools that reduce friction

A hoop, scissors, and a simple floss labeling method are enough. Upgrade later with a needle minder, scroll frame, or finer fabric after you know which parts of stitching you want to make faster.
